Removable Cosmetic Dentures

Removable dentures are considered one of the best solutions that have become widespread among many people recently, as they have solved many dental problems, whether due to tooth loss or damage. Undoubtedly, tooth loss has a negative impact on the patient, both psychologically and physically, as they cannot eat comfortably, leading to some diseases such as anemia or malnutrition. This is because they cannot consume certain types of food or chew and absorb them properly, in addition to losing a part of their self-confidence in this situation.

What are Removable Cosmetic Dentures?

Removable cosmetic dentures are artificial replacements for lost or damaged teeth due to staining or decay. They are made from various materials such as polyacrylic, zirconia, titanium, porcelain, and others. The basic idea behind them is to compensate for the function of missing teeth and maintain the aesthetic and natural appearance of the teeth.

If the patient desires this for cosmetic purposes, the dentist may have to use other techniques instead of removable dentures, such as teeth whitening or fixed veneers. Despite the widespread use of dental implants as a replacement for missing teeth, many people prefer removable dentures due to their lower cost compared to implants and suitability for a large segment of the population.

Advantages of Removable Cosmetic Dentures

Removable cosmetic dentures have more than one benefit and are distinguished by several advantages that make a large segment of people turn to them, including the following:

  • They are a type of artificial teeth that work to replace missing teeth and perform their function, allowing the patient to chew and grind food again, in addition to assisting them in speaking and producing sounds correctly.
  • Dentures help treat the deformities resulting from tooth loss or damage.
  • Removable dentures help maintain the remaining teeth, as the gaps caused by missing teeth can affect the healthy teeth and lead to their eventual loss.
  • Removable dentures allow the patient to clean them easily and remove them from the mouth if they cause mouth irritations.
  • Their prices vary widely, depending on the materials used in their manufacture, allowing everyone to choose what suits their financial situation.

Disadvantages of Removable Dentures

Despite the many advantages of removable dentures, they have some drawbacks, which we will explain in the following points:

  • One of the main disadvantages is that they sometimes move from their place while consuming solid foods, despite being fixed with an adhesive material.
  • Removable dentures are not permanent and must be replaced with new ones every few years.
  • The person who has had dentures installed may experience temporary nausea, increased salivation, and difficulty speaking, but these symptoms will disappear after a few days, once they become accustomed to the new dentures.

Types of Removable Cosmetic Dentures

Complete Dentures

These are used if the person has lost all their teeth or if the remaining teeth are in poor condition and need to be removed. Complete removable dentures require more than one visit to the dentist to create a denture that fits each person’s jaw shape.

The dentist takes an impression of the jaw and teeth, creates a wax model based on this impression, and tries it on the patient multiple times to ensure a proper fit. Then, the dentist manufactures the denture using the wax model from acrylic material, and it is ready for use within a few weeks, once the jaw has healed from the extraction of damaged teeth.

The patient may face a crisis during this period, as their mouth will remain without any teeth until the final denture is ready. In such cases, the dentist may provide a temporary immediate denture for the patient to wear until the permanent one is ready. The complete denture may be for the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both.

Partial Removable Dentures

These dentures are used when a person has lost only some of their teeth, and there are still healthy teeth remaining adjacent to the missing ones to support the denture. Partial dentures consist of a transparent or gum-colored flexible acrylic base, with artificial teeth attached to it that resemble natural teeth. When placed in the mouth, they fill the gaps left by missing teeth and perform their function, providing an aesthetic appearance. They can be removed for cleaning and during sleep.

Cosmetic Dentures

These dentures are solely for improving the aesthetic appearance of the front teeth and do not aid in chewing or cutting functions. Their use is limited to taking photographs or during speaking and smiling. They are either ready-made or custom-made for each patient’s jaw shape and are attached to the existing front teeth.

Cost of Removable Dentures

To determine the cost of removable dentures, we must understand that it varies depending on several factors, such as the type of denture used, the number of missing teeth, the condition of the jaws, the dentist’s expertise and skill level, and the quality of The Dental Center.

How are Removable Dentures Secured?

Removable dentures are secured using a specialized adhesive material that comes in a tube similar to toothpaste or in powder form. A small amount of this adhesive is applied to the clean tooth surface where the denture will be attached.

It is important to note that using too much adhesive can have a counterproductive effect and prevent the denture from fitting properly on the jaw. Therefore, it is essential to use a small amount of adhesive, which will serve its purpose effectively.

After applying the adhesive to the denture, it is immersed in the material for thirty seconds to moisten the adhesive, and then the dentist secures it in the mouth.

Partial dentures or removable front teeth dentures are secured using metal clasps that interlock with the adjacent natural teeth and are adhered using a special adhesive that is also sold with them and does not harm the teeth or gums.

Side Effects of Removable Dentures

There are some side effects that result from wearing removable dentures, including the following:

  • Difficulty consuming certain types of food, such as solid or highly viscous foods, which can cause pain and may lead to loosening or breaking parts of the dentures.
  • Initially, the person wearing dentures may find it difficult to speak and experience a whistling sound in their mouth, but this issue will not persist and will disappear once they become accustomed to wearing the dentures.
  • Partial removable dentures in the mouth are considered a foreign body, which may cause discomfort due to their large size and bulkiness, but this feeling will subside as the patient becomes accustomed to their presence.
  • Increased salivation and nausea when wearing removable dentures for the first time.
  • The possibility of developing mouth sores, which can be avoided by rinsing with saltwater and maintaining good oral hygiene.
  • It is essential for the patient to take care of removable dentures to benefit from their numerous advantages.

How to Maintain Removable Cosmetic Dentures for a Longer Time?

  • It is important for the patient to remove the dentures before sleeping and clean them thoroughly with a brush to remove any accumulated debris or food particles. They should be stored in a designated soaking solution overnight.
  • Avoid consuming solid or sticky foods that can adhere to the dentures.
  • Regularly rinse with warm saltwater to protect the mouth from diseases, infections, and ulcers, and maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Cover the mouth with a hand while sneezing or coughing, as the air pressure in these situations can cause the dentures to move from their position.
  • Regular follow-up with a dentist is necessary to ensure the health of the mouth, gums, and tissues, which change as a person ages. The dentures may need adjustments to accommodate these changes.
